IWSG: Look Back

It’s time for another group posting of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group! founded by Alex J. Cavanaugh. Time to release our fears to the world – or offer encouragement to those who are feeling neurotic. If you’d like to join us, click on the tab above and sign up. We post the first Wednesday of every month. Your words might be the encouragement someone needs. You can also join us on twitter using the hashtag #IWSG, or on the Facebook page.

Now, IWSG hosts have changed up the format in an effort to make it more fun and interactive.Every month, they will announce a question that members can answer in their IWSG Day post. These questions may prompt you to share advice, insight, a personal experience or story. Include your answer to the question in your IWSG post or let it inspire your post if you are struggling with something to say.

Don’t forget to visit others that day to see their answers. Want to join, or learn more? Visit our - Sign-up List.

DECEMBER QUESTION: As you look back on 2017, with all its successes and failures, if you could backtrack, what would you do differently?

MY ANSWER: I would take a few more chances. I let fear and naysayers keep me from trying something new, and from a few submission opportunities I had. My confidence took a hit this year, and I'm trying to get back on the writing horse with some new goals. I hope you won't give up either.

What would you do differently?

It's so easy to let fear hold us back. Here's to a braver and productive 2018!

My confidence took a hit last year. In December, so it's been exactly a year since then. But I am happy to report that I took chances, even with the depression that slowed me down the first half of the year.

Like you, I took a confidence hit this year, but instead of impacting my actions, I honestly think it impacted my writing. Trying to get back to where I was before. Good luck to you on regaining your confidence!

This is my first time here, Sylvia. I followed your blog and will connect with you online.

For me, I need to be brave and send out my short stories. I obsess too much. I need to let them go. To take my chances. It's always a no, if I never send something out. My children say I overthink everything. Yes I do. I just don't know how to stop it. Any suggestions?

Good luck in 2018. Try for anything. Happy Holidays!

Keep on keeping on, Sylvia. Never let anyone tell you what you can, and cannot do. Keep the negatives out of your writing career. Surround yourself with supporters...like us! :-)

Thanks everyone! It's so great being a part of a supportive community that can relate.

Victoria - I'm the same way! Not sure if it's a female trait, or a mom one, but I can definitely relate! Thanks for stopping by. I'll return the visit.

Saddle up, Sylvia! Gallop out of the comfort zone! The best stuff happens out in the wilds, I reckon. If I was going to have another crack at 2017, I would put a mediation app on my phone a lot sooner. Because sometimes you do need a bit of a comfort zone rest stop too :-)

Kicking the fear aside and "just doing it" sounds easy when the Nike ads say it, but not so easy in real life :) I hope you are able to find a way in 2018.

I think confidence is essential, but writing and insecurity seem to go together far too naturally. Follow your instincts!
