IWSG: I QUIT!

It’s time for another group posting of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group! founded by Alex J. Cavanaugh. Time to release our fears to the world – or offer encouragement to those who are feeling neurotic. If you’d like to join us, click on the tab above and sign up. We post the first Wednesday of every month. Your words might be the encouragement someone needs. You can also join us on twitter using the hashtag #IWSG, or on the Facebook page.

Now, IWSG hosts have changed up the format in an effort to make it more fun and interactive.Every month, they will announce a question that members can answer in their IWSG Day post. These questions may prompt you to share advice, insight, a personal experience or story. Include your answer to the question in your IWSG post or let it inspire your post if you are struggling with something to say.

Don’t forget to visit others that day to see their answers. Want to join, or learn more? Visit our - Sign-up List.

JUNE QUESTION:
Did you ever say “I quit”? If so, what happened to make you come back to writing?

My Answer: There have been a few times I have thought about quitting. An overwhelming numbers of rejections at one time, a really MEAN rejection letter from a highly acclaimed publication editor, and a terrifying health diagnosis have all instigated periods where I quit writing at different times in my life. Yet, just like so many of you, I couldn't really quit. Writing is an addiction, a catharsis, and a passion. I'm sure I will continue writing until I die, or lose my mind... whichever comes first ;-)

Have you ever quit writing? Are you back on the wagon, or done for good?

I will never understand the mean rejections. I think a lot of times when we want to quit we may just need a break to get us motivated again.

Just like you, I can't give it up either - writing is very much a therapy for me!

Um, yeah, let's not go for the losing your mind thing. That doesn't sound like a great option. ;)

Since you can't quit, those were just breaks.

Ugh. So sorry about the mean rejection and the health diagnosis. Why would a publisher/agent find it necessary to be mean to an author they've never read before or even met? Believe me, I understand a little bit of the frustration editors must feel: I was a lit magazine editor for a brief stint and there were times when I just wanted to scream! But still, never take it out on the author.

I do hope your health is doing better. Health challenges are difficult. Again, I speak from experience (much more than the stint as a lit mag editor!) Best of luck to you and take care!! Oh, and keep writing :D

I'm rather belatedly getting around to some of these IWSG posts! But had to drop in and say hi, and agree with those who think that a mean rejection is really unnecessary! Just saying "no" to our little perfect creations is mean enough :) Glad you can't quit, though.

I wind up quitting now and then, or at least, giving up the idea that I could ever be **good**. I lose momentum and have to build that back up.
